Synopsis

The northern white rhino is one of the most endangered animals on our planet. Dvůr Králové Zoo is the only institution in the world where it has reproduced. However, in the meantime, poachers rapidly decimated their numbers in Africa. In the 1980s, the Dvůr Králové Zoo decided to provide San Diego Zoo Global, an experienced breeder, with a few of its rare rhinos. It was done not only for their safety, but especially to increase the chances to rescue this exceptionally endangered species. Unfortunately, no calf was ever born in San Diego and four calves born in the Dvůr Králové Zoo could not compensate for the losses of wild rhinos in Africa. The species seemed to be doomed. Since the year 2000, the animals had not reproduced and the Dvůr Králové Zoo made a decision to give them the last chance for their natural reproduction. The last four northern white rhinos in the world were thus transported to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya.
